Updated: Contractor Killed in Gerdau Rolling Mill

James Lanier, 24, of Cartersville was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries.

A contractor working at Gerdau's Cartersville steel mill was killed this morning, company Communications and Public Affairs Manager Kimberly Selph confirmed.

The man involved in what the company calls a "serious accident ... in the rolling mill" was taken to the hospital by ambulance but died from the injuries.

Deputy Coroner Brandon Duncan identified the Action Electric contractor as 24-year-old James Lanier of Cartersville.

Gerdau, the leading producer of long steel in the Americas and one of the largest suppliers of special long steel in the world, said an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Duncan and Selph said the Occupational Safety and Health Administration also is conducting an investigation.

A 55-year-old Kennesaw man was killed when overrun by a forklift in the mill's last fatal incident, according to .
