Cartersville Woman Charged in Fatal July 3 Crash

She faces first-degree vehicular homicide and DUI charges in connection with the crash on GA Highway 293 in Bartow County.

A Cartersville woman has been charged in connection with the July 3 crash that killed a passenger in her vehicle.

Michelle Lea Staples, 33, of Oak Hollow Road in Cartersville, turned herself into the Bartow County jail Wednesday on first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to drive within a single lane and DUI charges, according to the Bartow County Sheriff's Office.

Staples is charged in connection with the crash at 2:11 p.m. on GA Highway 293, which resulted in the death of Carl Beattie, 66, of Acworth, according to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright.

Authorities say Beattie was a passenger in the vehicle driven by Staples, which was traveling northbound when it crossed the southbound lane, ran off the road on the west side and struck a tree.

Staples was injured in the crash and taken to Kennestone Memorial Hospital in nearby Kennesaw.
