Ambulance Carrying Injured Trooper Overturns

The trooper injured while chasing a wrong-way driver in Bartow County was on his way to the hospital when the ambulance overturned.

An ambulance carrying a Georgia State Patrol trooper injured in a crash involving a wrong-way driver in Bartow County overturned on the way to the hospital.

According to the agency, "the driver lost control of the ambulance while negotiating a curve, ran off the roadway, and the vehicle overturned."

The vehicle was transporting Trooper First Class Jonathon Mason, who suffered injuries in the crash involving a wrong-way driver in a pick-up truck.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Saturday, Mason spotted the truck driving the wrong way on Davis Drive near Cartersville and he tried to initiate a traffic stop.

However, the truck kept going, and a chase ensued. Both vehicles "made contact" and crashed on Old Alabama Road at Sewell Road, the Georgia State Patrol said.

While he suffered injuries, Mason was able to capture one of three suspects who were in the truck.

The driver of the pick-up truck turned himself in Sunday morning, but the second passenger of the vehicle has not been located.

The agency said they don't believe speed was a factor in the ambulance's accident.
Mason was treated and released from the hospital.
