What Seasonal Plant Can be Deadly for Your Pets?

FDA warns of spring plant that can kill your cat.

The Easter lily spring for many, but it can also be deadly for our feline friends.

The Food and Drug Administration is reminding pet owners of the potential danger Easter lilies carry for cats.

"Eating small amounts of plants or grass may be normal for cats," the FDA states. "But the entire lily plant (leaf, pollen and flower) is poisonous to them."

The FDA warning notes that even if cats eat just a couple of leaves or lick a few pollen grains from their fur they can suffer acute kidney failure within a short period of time.

FDA Veterinarian Melanie McLean stated that if a cat eats part of lily they will begin vomiting. The vomiting will lessen over two to four hours and within 12 to 24 hours the cat may start to urinate frequently.

McLean stated that if kidney failure sets in the cat will stop peeing altogether and, if untreated, die in four to seven days.

According to the FDA, early veterinary treatment is critical in such situation.

Other lilies such as Calla and Peace lilies will not cause kidney failure but can irritate  a cat's mouth and esophagus. Also, Lilies of the Valley are toxic to the heart and can cause an abnormal heart rhythm.
