Bartow State Senate Candidates Headed for Runoff

Republicans Bruce Thompson of White and Matt Laughridge of Cartersville are set to square off again Dec 3.

None of the five remaining candidates vying for the state Senate seat representing portions of Bartow, Cherokee and Cobb counties garnered a majority of the votes in the special election to fill the post vacated by Barry Loudermilk.

The top vote getters Tuesday, Nov. 5, in the District 14 race, both Bartow residents, are set to face off again in a special election runoff Dec. 3.

Republican Bruce Thompson of White led the field with more than 2,400 total votes, which represents more than 33 percent of the total ballots cast in the three counties, according to unofficial Bartow, Cherokee and Cobb elections results, which don't include provisional ballots.

Matt Laughridge of Cartersville came in second with 1,840 votes, or about 25.5 percent, edging out Cherokee's Dwight Pullen, also a Republican, who racked up more than 1,500 votes, or about 21.3 percent.

Republican Nicole Ebbeskotte of Cherokee received fewer votes than the sole Democratic candidate with 553 or 7.67 percent. Democrat and Bartow resident Chistopher G. Nesmith of Adairsville got 863 or 11.97 percent of the votes.

In Georgia, a candidate is required to get 50 percent plus one vote to avoid a runoff in races with more than two contenders.

Dean Sheridan of Acworth in Cherokee County last month pulled out of the race.

Loudermilk resigned to focus on his bid for U.S. Congress.
