Severe Thunderstorms Heading Toward Cartersville

The National Weather Forecast warns that damaging winds may be part of the storms.

Cartersville residents can expect showers and thunderstorms to come blowing through town today, mainly after 5 p.m. And some of them could be severe.

Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 5pm. Some of the storms could be The south wind of 10 to 15 mph should continue, with gusts as high as 20 mph. The chance of precipitation is 60 percent today, with new rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Confidence is high that isolated severe storms will accompany this system, either embedded within a squall line or from discrete thunderstorms developing ahead of the squall line.

Although damaging winds will be the main threat, a few embedded tornadoes and large hail are also possible. Estimated timing of the squall line is entering northwest Georgia by late afternoon or early evening.

Rainfall amounts will be heavy at times, especially across north and parts of central Georgia where 1 to 2 inches are expected. These rainfall amounts could result in brief minor flooding of a few area streams and rivers as well as other typical low lying flood prone areas.

Tonight  in Cartersville, some of the showers and thunderstorms could be severe and produce heavy rainfall. The chance for rain is 100 percent. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Look for the sun on Friday, when the high will be near 73, though it will still be windy. A west wind of 5-15 mph will be blowing, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
