Participants will learn to take images of the universe. Images created will be used in astrophotography exhibitions featuring their unique images, captions, poems, and comparisons to images taken by NASA's space-based observatories. The program promotes increased interest, awareness, and knowledge of astronomy content, understanding of technology and proficiency in real scientific research skills.

Tellus Science Museum reports that the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and Smithsonian Affiliations have partnered through an award from the Youth Access Grant fund to offer underserved middle school youth a variety of resources developed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, through the MicroObservatory Telescope Network and the network of Smithsonian Affiliates across the country.

Through the Tellus Science Museum’s partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, the museum is training a select few people to operate the MicroObservatory robotic telescopes housed at Smithsonian observatories in Arizona and Massachusetts.

Participants will learn how to download and process images they have instructed the robotic telescopes to capture. Participants will be invited to share their best images with Tellus. The best ones will be selected for exhibit in the museum.

Pre-registration is required and participants will need a laptop computer. For those who do not have access to a laptop, a limited number will be available to use during the workshop. Families may work in teams and share a laptop. This workshop is limited to only 60 participants.
