Steve Webb Says Dobbins Mining Landscape Needs to be Protected
Steve Webb, senior principal archeologist and president of R.S. Webb & Associates, talks about proposed 411 connector.
Steve Webb, senior principal archeologist and president of R.S. Webb & Associates, a cultural resources management firm out of Holly Springs, Ga., says it's important to characterize the Dobbins landscape as a landscape instead of an archeological site.
The mining landscape is a collection of these features and how those features were used to exploit manganese on the eastern face of Dobbins mountain. It's important to preserve these kinds of resources because there are very few of them, they are very rare.
GDOT's proposed route will have an adverse effect on the Dobbins mining landscape in my opinion. The route will cut through the Southern part of the landscape and in that process it will destroy approximately 24 acres. In addition to that, it will isolate 21 acres of the landscape on the South side of the route.

Dobbins mining landscape has been deemed eligible by the keeper of the national register and it's my opinion that we need to do everything that we can to protect it. Webb says, "I'm a citizen of Georgia and I want to see projects move forward and be successful but I just think that there's got to be a better route through this area than through this important historic resource."
