Hospital Offers Reduced-Rate Mammograms

In order to encourage all women to take proactive steps to care for themselves and preserve their health, The Women’s Center at will offer all mammograms—including digital—at a special rate of $49 in October through the end of the year. It's a 50 percent discount from the normal charge of $99 and a separate physician reading fee will apply.

The chance of developing invasive breast cancer at some point in a woman's life is approximately one in eight, hospital official said in a press release. Breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. There are currently about 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

“This special rate meets the need for affordable mammography screenings in our community, which is an important factor in overall women’s health.” says Melanie Vanhorn, Women’s Center supervisor. “We are excited to offer this opportunity to the women of our community.”

Highlighting the month’s awareness activities is —an event especially for breast cancer patients and survivors—on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring the female breast care physician team, refreshments, beauty tips, door prizes and a special take-home “paint-it-yourself” party favor.

in Cartersville will provide a Clinique representative for consultations and coupons for free facials for event attendees. Additionally, Belk has donated several fabulous door prizes for the event. Donna Wood will pamper attendees with BeautiControl hand moisturizing products and The Hope Center Foundation will launch a new support group, Jewels of Hope, a fun jewelry-making class for every skill level.

The Women’s Center and The Hope Center report a good response from community organizations interested in partnering to raise awareness about breast cancer, including The Magnolia Garden Club in Cartersville, which will place two planters of pink flowers at the entrance of The Hope Center in observance of this special month. 

Finally, to celebrate women’s health and encourage women to schedule their mammograms, The Hope Center at Cartersville Medical Center will hang a special over-sized vertical banner on the front of The Hope Center with the message “Is it Time?”—a visual reminder of the importance of early detection.  Bright pink billboards were recently posted touting “The Best Women for the Job” and featuring physicians Rhonda Wachsmuth, Madhurima Uppalapati and Lorie Hughes. 

All mammograms at Cartersville Medical Center are performed on state-of-the-art mammography equipment. The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely—once is not enough. Women should have their baseline mammogram at age 35 and annual screening mammograms after the age of 40.  A separate physician fee will apply for all mammograms.
