Frozen Yogurt Shop, TCBY, Set to Open

Following the of and City Swirl Frozen Yogurt, which ended an extended frozen-yogurt-shop drought in Cartersville, perhaps the country's most recognizable such dessert stop is set to open on the west side of town.

Near and , TCBY is set for 807 West Avenue in Westside Plaza. According to tcby.com, its two closest yogurt shops are on Roswell Road in Marietta and Atlanta.

A local person owns the franchise store, one of more than 600 TCBY locations worldwide, according to spokesman Christy Olliff. She offered more information on the Salt Lake City-based company owned by Mrs. Fields Famous Brands.

• TCBY, The Country’s Best Yogurt, was founded in 1981, and is considered the pioneer of the frozen yogurt category with 30 years under its belt.
• In the early 80s, as the country began to embrace healthier eating styles, TCBY founders, Frank and Georgia Hickingbotham, decided that a frozen yogurt product could be a better option to fat-filled ice cream treats, thus creating TCBY.
• TCBY has more than 60 frozen yogurt flavors that are either 98 percent fat free, fat free or no sugar added.
• In May 2011, TCBY launched Super Fro-Yo, a reformulated version of its yogurt with a more nutrient-rich profile. The company brought down the fat content of its yogurt to below 2 percent, so it can be labeled low fat. However, the product has also maintained its rich, creamy texture with the addition of fiber, something American consumers are told to eat more of. The fiber in TCBY's product also serves as a prebiotic, or food for the healthful bacteria in the yogurt, which boosts the benefit that live-and-active cultures bring to the digestive system. Super Fro-Yo is also higher in protein, vitamin A, vitamin D and calcium, and the product now includes seven types of probiotics. To qualify as Super Fro-Yo, for example, the yogurt must have fewer than 120 calories per serving, a minimum of 10 percent of the daily recommendation for vitamin A and 20 percent of the recommended level of vitamin D, 1 gram or less of saturated fat, and a minimum of 20 billion live-and-active cultures at the point of manufacture.
