'Stooges' a Local, 'Not-Bad Comedy'

"The Three Stooges," portions of which were filmed in Cartersville, opened in theaters Friday.

The Farrelly Brothers' remake of a slapstick comedy classic, which has local ties, fails to measure up to the critics, who say the "not-bad comedy" has some decent gags, but is too long with too much filler, according to a Rotten Tomatoes' Critics Consensus.

The Ryals-Davis Home in Cartersville is featured in The Three Stooges, along with local children as extras, reports . The movie opens with orphanage scenes, some of which were filmed at the 1850s home on Old Alabama Road that served as a hospital during the Civil War.Β 

Only 43 percent of ο»ΏRotten Tomatoesο»Ώ' Tomatometer critics Monday had given The Three Stooges a favorable rating, but 72 percent of users comprised of audience members had rated it 3.5 out of 5 or higher.

Larry, Curly and Moe, left on a nun's doorstep as children, are out to save their childhood home, the orphanage, but stumble into a murder plot and reality show.

Stooges had 47 "rotten" and 35 "fresh" reviews from 84 critics, including 25 top critics. They ranged from "I laughed, and laughed," to "I didn't laugh much," and referenced the slapstick nature and history of original Stooges shorts.

"Can anyone who isn't a Stooge fan possibly enjoy The Three Stooges? More to the point, can anyone who IS a Stooge fan (like me) possibly find merit in this Farrelly misfire?" said Matt Brunson of Creative Loafing in a review.

Patch film critic Brett Martin , but some raved about the movie.

"Pop culture references intermingle with the loopy trio's iconic foolishness, and the result is a movie with some big laughs, plenty of heart and terrible coifs. USA Today's Claudia Puig said in a review.
