Pumphouse Players' 'Wit' Opens Sept. 21

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play set for the stage in Cartersville, an inspiration for cast and crew, tells the story of a professor and her battle with cancer.

Pumphouse Players' newest production, Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Wit inspired its cast and crew.

The play is about Professor Vivian Bearing and her battle—often a battle of wits—with Stage IV ovarian cancer. The professor walks the audience through several flashbacks in her life that are relevant to her current experience with cancer. Though the overall subject matter is serious, Bearing is able to convey these stories with elements of humor.

Set for the for two weekends, beginning Sept. 21, Wit was the theater group's inspiration to raise money for cancer care and research via Relay for Life.

"The theatre has been absent from Relay for Life in the last decade or so, but felt with this play the timing was just right to get involved again with this wonderful organization," said the press release. "Part of the theatre’s fundraising efforts included selling Wit program spaces for anyone who wanted to honor or memorialize a loved one affected by cancer. All proceeds have gone to the American Cancer Society."

Wit is directed by Meghann K. Humphreys and features Donna Young as Professor Vivian Bearing. The cast also includes Dana O’Bryan as Susie; Ian Gibson as Dr. Jason Posner; Sandy Cunningham as Professor E.M. Ashford; Chris Bern as Dr. Harvey Kelekian/Mr. Bearing; and, in various vital roles, Zachary Planchet, Craig Popham, Katy Gramling and Doug Cardoza.
