Movie Stars in Town Meet Fans

Cartersville Patch writer Cady Schulman shares her experience meeting Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon on Wednesday.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m obsessed with celebrities. And, in my career as a journalist, I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few famous people, such as Cal Ripken Jr., Al Gore and Bobby Cox. And, a few months ago, I got to meet Kim Fields, better known as Tootie from The Facts of Life, when she visited .

So, when I heard that Devil’s Knot was , I was obviously obsessed with catching a glimpse of one of the . My drive through town somehow always ended up driving by the old courthouse where the movie is being filmed. And yes, I was one of those people who slowed down, craning my neck to try to get a glimpse of someone. I saw Reese Witherspoon from a distance the first day of filming, and I thought that was pretty neat. I didn’t really expect much else since I haven’t had the time to go downtown to watch.

Until Wednesday night, that is. My husband, daughter and I were driving home after a late dinner in town following Lucy’s gymnastics class and a city council meeting I had covered in Marietta. We caravanned home, taking Church Street although I really wanted to drive down Cherokee Avenue again. And, when we drove by the courthouse parking lot, we saw a group of people gathered.

I immediately turned onto Elizabeth Street to pull over and tell Joe that we had to go over there to see what was going on. Joe thought I was being crazy. I insisted, and he went along with it, even though I knew he was ready to get home.

I’m a very shy person, so when we pulled into the courthouse parking lot, I asked Joe to go over and see what was going on while I waited with Lucy. He was sure it was just a group of extras waiting while a scene was being filmed. I was adamant that it was onlookers.

I’ll give you one guess as to who was right. Not Joe. He called me and told me to hurry with Lucy, and when we joined the group, we saw Colin Firth signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. I totally wanted to squeal and tell him how much I love him, but I was cool, calm and collected. I waited my turn, got my autograph but before I could get a picture, he turned away to other fans. I tried to ask for a picture as well but, as I said, I can get rather shy and quiet, so I went to the back of the line.

Then, he got ready to leave. I got disheartened. Until, one of the people in his group saw Lucy, who was patiently holding my hand, and told him to wait because he HAD to have his picture taken with this baby (who isn’t really a baby at 2 ½, but who am I to argue?). And, of course, the baby’s mommy. Duh. Lucy tried to fight it. I told her what was going on as calmly as I could. She didn’t care, but she went with it. Yes, I used my child to get my picture taken with a movie star, and I’m not ashamed of it!

Another group had gathered at the other end of the parking lot, so we hurried on over there to find Reese Witherspoon signing autographs. She wasn’t posing for pictures, but who were we to complain? Some people had the fabulous idea of having the stars sign their cell phone cases, but that didn’t register with me. It’s a good thing I had my trusty reporter’s notebook on hand.

One girl handed Reese a small piece of yellow paper with her own autograph on it. Reese said she was going to cry. See? I’m already on a first-name basis with them.

It was an unexpected, fun night. Some of the people with the celebrities commented on how nice the residents of Cartersville were. No one crowded them. No one pushed. Everyone waited patiently for their turn. I said, “That’s how we are in Cartersville.”

Colin Firth and Reese Witherspoon didn’t have to spend their Wednesday evening standing outside Bartow County’s old courthouse meeting their fans. But, they did. It was an awesome gesture, and it made a lot of people very happy.

I’m looking forward to the next movie that will be filmed in Cartersville (because I’m sure there will be another at some point) and, yes, I’ll still be the one driving by slowly, hoping to catch a glimpse of yet another star.

When they were in Morrow filming my two sisters bnd myself and our kids sit and watched from across the street for 2 days just about 6 people. We seen Reese get in and out of her car and she never would even acknowledge that we were there no smile, no wave, no nothing . Pretty much a disappointment .

Well 3 weeks ago they were filming in Morrow, Ga and my children, my sisters, and myself (6 ppl) sat out there and watched some of the filming take place, which was cool. We did see Reese, but she kept her head down, not a smile, wave or anything, she plays her Sweet Home Alabama role real good, as far as the part she says she is better than them..I think that part got to her head. You know its sad for her..what was there not enough media or camers for her? Her bodyguard he is a very rude man..He told us he would get us signed pictures if we left our info. Well my mom on the last day they were filming gave the bodyguard our info and when the bodyguard thought my mom was taking a pic he tossed the paper back at her and said if u cant play by the rules they dont get their autograph..that ruined it for me..why were they going to mail us a pic and autograph?? We aren't rich enough for her to sign one then? Well if it wasn't for her fans her career wouldnt be as great as it is..she should appreciate all her fans..im likely not one now though.

The question: Should Georgia officially acknowledge Slavery? The reason for this: to bringRead More reconciliation among the people of this state. Now, how will that help this state achieve higher GPA's? How will that help reduce the jobless in this state? Many of us have said, we're sorry it happened, it was wrong, but NOW is not the time to spend more time/more hours on such a resolution, as AGAIN this is not the first time this has been bought up in the legislation, and before it was certainly intended to be an apology. (See HR 295-2009) but never made it to the floor. If I thought this would bring more jobs, solve the education in this state, help the poor, get all the foreclosed properties sold, then I would jump on the band wagon, but we have some very serious problems that need to be addressed, and the people of Ga. deserve more than this from an elected official. We are responding to the question that was purposed to the readers by The Patch. I do not try to change another mind, its my opinion only, but I do resent someone that openly admits they moved here from Florida, then before that lived in Europe/Cuba tell Georgians how ignorant, and stupid they are. Talking about rude, maybe you would like to apologize for calling other's names. If someone/ANYONE doesn't agree w/me and loves that this Rep has introduced a age old resolution while ignoring revelent and very real problems that exist today, that's fine, that's your perrogotive, but respect other's opinions.

Rob, Thanks for sharing the link. I think it is quite well written, and it presented someRead More historical information that I was not familiar with (i.e. Oglethorpe banned slavery in the original colony of Georgia). For me, the key justification for doing this is plainly stated in the resolution: "Whereas, while even the most abject apology cannot right the transgressions, injustices and oppressive acts of the past, the spirit of true repentance can promote reconciliation among all people and avert the repetition of past injustices for future generations." Promote reconciliation. We need to reconcile in our State where there remains a great deal of racism (visible in this thread, although the worst offender's comment has been removed). As I said earlier, I don't know how much good this will do, but it is an easy thing to do and it can't hurt. Sincerely, Alex
