'Kill the Messenger' Films in Cartersville

Red Top Mountain State Park will serve as the set in portions of the movie about a reporter who exposed CIA's involvement in importing cocaine in the 1990's.

Kill the Messenger, based on the true story of reporter Gary Webb, is the latest movie to film in Cartersville, according to Reel Georgia, the state's online film guide.

Set to be released in 2014, Jeremy Renner stars as Webb, The San Jose Mercury-News reporter who uncovered the Central Intelligence Agency's role in importing cocaine into California, which was sold to raise money for the Nicaraguan Contras rebel army, according to MovieWeb, which has more on the all-star cast

Webb became the target of a smear campaign that almost led him to suicide.

Kill the Messenger has already filmed in Atlanta and parts of Cobb County, but its vintage cars, jet skis and equipment this week were spotted at the park on Lake Allatoona, according to Reel Georgia. Photographer Skip Hammerman captured several photos.
