Giddyup! Cowboy Gathering Rides into Booth Museum

10th annual event features art exhibit, golf tournament, cook-off and more.

Saddle up! For the 10th year, the Booth Western Art Museum is hosting its Southeastern Cowboy Gathering this week, Thursday through Saturday.

New events this year include a golf tournament, while returning favorites include the Chuckwagon Cook-Off.

This year's featured artist is Dave McGary, who will lead a gallery walk at 4 p.m. Thursday through his Native Expressions: Dave McGary’s Bronze Realism exhibit. A "Meet the Artist" reception will follow at 5, and McGary will present a lecture on his style and career at 7.

Visitors may also take in the National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West exhibit in its final days at the Booth this weekend.

New this year is a Featured Artist Golf Tournament on Friday with McGary. "Participants will have the opportunity to play golf with a well-known, respected artist," said Tom Shinall, the Booth's marketing director.

The four-person team scramble, taking place at the Woodland Hills Golf Club, is $100 per player and includes 18 holes, range balls, cart, lunch and soft drinks. Each team will have the chance to play a hole with McGary and the Booth's Executive Director Seth Hopkins.

Saturday will bring the Southeastern Chuck Wagon Cook-Off and a variety of family friendly activities.

"The Chuck Wagon Cook-Off is so neat to see," Shinall said. "Seven chuck wagons will be set up preparing meals . . . just as on the cattle drives in the 1800s over open flames." He added that the cook-off has grown to be the largest and oldest competition of its type east of the Mississippi.

Meal tickets for the cook-off can be purchased in advance for $15.

While the Saturday night concert at the Grand Theatre featuring Asleep at the Wheel is sold out, Shinall said there is a waiting list for seats.

Events also include mandolin, fiddle, guitar and banjo contests; "Writing Through Art Literary Contest" finals; and children's activities.

Shinall said some 3,000 visitors attended the event last year, and that organizers are hoping for a similar turnout this year.
