Women of the Moose Sponsor Ride Benefiting Women's Shelter
Cartersville's Women of the Moose is sponsoring the Saturday motorcycle ride to benefit Tranquility House Battered Women's Shelter.
Locals are preparing to take to the road in the name of a good cause Saturday, in honor of The Christian League of Battered Women, Tranquility House and The Women of the Moose.
Motorcyclists and their passengers will ride 90 miles through Bartow and Floyd counties to raise awareness and donations for the cause.
“I have been a battered and abused woman myself, and I wanted to reach out to other women in that position,” said Jenny England, Community Service chairman for Cartersville’s Women of the Moose. “I had somewhere to go but some women don’t. I want to keep reaching out, I want people to know that The Women of the Moose club in general is about charity and family and community.”

According to its website, Tranquility House’s Mission Statement is as follows:
“The mission of Tranquility House is to provide an emergency shelter as a refuge for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, a 24-hour crisis hot line and to further promote community awareness of the problems of domestic violence."
“Over the years we have helped thousands of women, at least 2,000 or 3,000 a year for the services we offer as a whole,” said Tranquility House Executive Director Sandra Bruce. “It’s not unusual for us to have up to 2,000 crisis calls a year alone, as we receive calls through the national hot line as well. We are here to help any victim that needs our services.”
Bruce feels that the presence of a shelter like Tranquility House is invaluable in Cartersville.
“There is still domestic violence in our community and we are here to help,” said Bruce. “Sometimes victims may need to leave in the middle of the night with only the clothes on their back, they need a place to go, a place to get on their feet, to find legal help, help finding jobs or getting children enrolled In school.”
Bruce also said that the support group which meets at Tranquility House is a valuable resource to victims of domestic abuse because it offers them a chance to meet and speak with other victims, but with licensed counselors who can help them make real progress in sorting things out.
According to Bruce, when most people hear about domestic abuse they usually think about physical abuse, but should keep in mind there are many different types of abuse including emotional, verbal, sexual, and abuse through threats and intimidation to name a few.
Sign-in and registration for the will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Cartersville Moose Lodge 2372 at 314 North Dixie Avenue and will continue until the bikers hit the road at 12:30 pm. Entry fees are $20 per bike and $25 per bike with a passenger.
Additional event activities for those not riding include a corn hole tournament beginning at 2 p.m. as well as band performances, an auction, raffles, karaoke and a barbecue lunch for $7 per person until the bikers return from their 90-mile trek at approximately 4 p.m.
