'The Big Latch On' Breastfeeding Event Set for Aug. 3 in Cartersville

The local gathering set for LifeSong Montessori School happens in conjunction with others across the world during World Breastfeeding Week.

For the third year in a row, a Cartersville woman is bringing a worldwide event to town.

Jacky Souders, who created Mummie's Nummies, a breastfeeding support blog and community, is set to host the 2013 Big Latch On event in Cartersville.

The Big Latch On, synchronized breastfeeding events held around the world during World Breastfeeding Week, aims to increase awareness and support of breastfeeding and breastfeeding in public places as a normal part of the day-to-day, according to its website.

World Breastfeeding Week, which is Aug. 1 to 7, is dedicating to "stimulating efforts among all breastfeeding advocates, governments and relevant agencies to generate public awareness and support for breastfeeding," according to its website.

The Big Latch On 2013 in Cartersville—set for Saturday, Aug. 3, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at LifeSong Montessori School—will include prizes and giveaways. Moms should have their babies latched on at 10:30 a.m. for the official count.

Organizers—both Sounders and her counterparts around the world—hope to break last year's record for the most moms breastfeeding at one time.

"Last year, we had a total of 92 people attend our event," Sounders said. "Considering the size of Cartersville, that is a huge number. This year has hopes of being just as big, if not bigger.

"With local vendors, delicious food, door prizes and Mummie Bags...every participant (will have) a blast."

In 2012, around the globe, 8,862 moms participated in The Big Latch On. The previous year, the number was 5,867, 26 of whom did so in Cartersville, according to Mummie's Nummies.
