National Weather Service: Danger of Fire High

Forecasters issued a Special Weather Statement for much of Georgia, including Bartow County.

As if we didn't already know based on the weekend's events, the likelihood of even more grass and woods fires is high, according to the National Weather Service.

As high pressure continues to slip off the southeast coast and a cold front moves into north Georgia, gusty winds combined with the low moisture levels in the brush will create ripe conditions for more blazes.

Those conditions are expected to last from mid-morning Monday through the early eventing with sustained winds of 15 miles per hour and gusts of 20 to 25 miles per hour. Relative humidity is expected to stay above 25 percent.

The chance of rain showers Monday night has increased to 50 percent. The high should be 70 and the low 50.

and fires burned hundreds of acres just south of Cartersville, and firefighters Saturday said they were unsure of the cause although dry conditions and wind probably played a factor.
