Did the Boy Scouts Get It Right?

The group’s National Council on Thursday reportedly gave the go-ahead to allow openly gay boys into its ranks. Tell us what you think of the decision.

A boy’s sexual orientation may soon be moot when he goes to join one national organization.

According to reports Thursday evening, the Boy Scouts of America voted to drop sexual orientation as one component of membership into the youth group. While the organization’s decision paved the way for openly gay boys to become Scouts, the group’s leadership stopped short of allowing gay Scout leaders.

Not all Scout troops may be receptive to the change.

In previous discussions over the issue, BSA spokesman Deron Smith said that under the then-proposed change, the BSA would not dictate a position to the various units, members or parents—it would be entirely up to the relevant sponsor organization to make the call.

Do you think the Boy Scouts made the right decision to allow openly gay boys? Should the organization go one step further and allow Scout leaders of any sexual orientation?

Mary: Let's just say that you or your son were gay. Wouldn't you want your child to be accepted into an organization that he or she was interested in joining? Whether it is scouting, 4H, or whatever? The gays DO have a right to be in organizations, just like straights do. This is America, where everyone is equal. The old days of discrimination are turning into dust. There are now bi-racial marriages, gay marriages, single parents, divorcees...the old walls of hatred and bigotry are falling fast. deal with it!

CLUBFV: who is forcing you to accept anything? The gays are not altering your life. I am straight and I have no beef with gays, blacks, or any other nationality...they are all fine with me. I do have a beef with ignorant people such as you, though.

PapaJ: Don't worry....your unacceptance and hatred for anything not like you is your problem. I pity you.

Of course BSA was pressured to make this change. Change does NOT happen without pressure! You say that this change was the result of a "personal agenda" rather than sound and fair logic. I find it odd that you say we should respect the rights of others, yet when a group of people is fighting for those rights it's NOT logical? Denise has seen teenagers commit suicide - wanting to stop that seems perfectly logical to me! If you don't want to take a shower with a gay man, no one is forcing you to anymore than a gay man is forced to take a shower with you! But you are automatically given the choice, a gay man doesn't have rights! It is interesting that you see someone else's rights as an "inconvenience" to you. Why must one side of the discussion use "logic" when the other side uses nothing but emotionalism and hatred to base their arguments on? Sometimes the truth is inconvenient. Every American having the same rights as other Americans seems very logical to me!
