Cowboys To Descend on Booth Museum

The 11th annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering will kick off on Thursday in Cartersville.

Cowboys across the southeast will ride into Cartersville this week as part of the 11th annual Southeastern Cowboy Gathering.

The three-day celebration will be held March 6-8 at the Booth Western Art Museum, and will include three art exhibits: Today's West! Contemporary Art from the Buffalo Bill Center of the West,Taking the Reins! The Art of Donna Howell-Sickles and Windows of the Soul: A Portrait of America by Susan K. Friedland.

Also on hand for the celebration will include artist Martin Grelle, entertainers Don Edwards and Waddie Mitchell; the finals of the High School Cowboy Poetry contest; children's activities; cowboy church; live entertainment featuring Buffalo Bill and Annie Oakley, Steve Porter and Tom Kerlin, The Old Mill Road Band and April Wehunt.

A Southeastern Chuck Wagon Cook-off will also take place at 8 a.m. Saturday on the museum's festival grounds, and will feature seven teams of cooks who will compete in the challenge. The teams will prepare five plates: potatoes, beans, bread, dessert and meat.

The cook-off is "designed to educate the public about the importance of the chuck wagon to the cowboys of the mid to late 1800's cattle drive era," according to museum.

Tickets are $15 and those with tickets will be served at noon. Residents should purchase tickets in advance by calling the museum at (770) 387-1300 or by visiting the museum in person. The winners of the competition will be announced at 2 p.m. Saturday.
