A Chance of Much Needed Rain

What do you need to know today? A lot happens in our not-so-little city, but we'll keep you informed.

1. A slight chance of rain becomes a 40 percent chanceΒ  by Monday night, according to the National Weather Service. Winds Monday could gust up to 15 miles per hour, while the chance of rain before 1 p.m. is 20 percent. A high of 68 is expected. The night should be mostly cloudy with a low of 46.

2. It's Presidents Day and while most federal government offices, including the post offices, and banks will be closed, city of Cartersville and Bartow County offices are not closed. Likewise, the kids β€” both and students β€” will be in school making up a snow day.

3. Don't miss the big news of the weekend: Wildfires both and kept firefighters and emergency crews busy, closed roads and charred hundreds of acres just south of Cartersville. A large area Sunday also burned off Burnt Hickory Road, and firefighters have the cause of the blazes.

The third Monday in February is the official celebration of the first president's Feb. 22 birthday, and that is due to legislation passed in 1968 that changed federal holidays to fall on Mondays.

But Washington's birthday or the third Monday in February is socially accepted as President's Day, also a celebration of Abraham Lincoln's Feb. 12 birthday. No congress or president has yet to officially change the name of the holiday.
