Light Snow, Black Ice Possible in Cartersville, Bartow County

A wind advisory that warns of northwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph is in effect from 5 p.m. Thursday to 4 a.m. Friday.

Snow, ice and gusting winds are possbible late today and tonight in north Georgia, including Cartersville and Bartow County, as a strong cold from makes its way into the area.

Expect "hazardous road conditions due to black ice and light snow accumulations at the elevations mainly 1,500 feet and above in north Georgia," according to a National Weather Service hazardous weather outlook in effect for numerous counties. "Accumulations will generally be a dusting to half of an inch with some locations getting up to 1 inch."  

A wind advisory for north and and central Georgia, including Bartow County, goes into effect at 5 p.m. Thursday and continues through 4 a.m. Friday. It warns of northwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. 

Tonight holds a 20 percent chance of rain for Bartow and a 21-degree low, according to the NWS forecast.

"Moisture ahead and along of a strong cold front will allow for continued rain today, then the passage of the front will bring a rapid decrease in temperatures," the hazardous weather outlook said. "Lingering moisture on the roadways will likely freeze across portions of north Georgia. Strong gradient winds will develop behind the front as well making for cold, blustery conditions overnight." 

Wind chill values will become significant as well, it says, warning if you must be outside for long periods of time, make sure you cover all exposed skin from the wind.
