Cartersville City Council To Eye Ban on Unregulated Synthetic Pot Sales, Use, Posession

The council meets tonight at 6 for a work session and 7 for regular business in Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 10 Public Square.

The Cartersville City Council meets tonight at 6 for a work session and 7 for regular business in Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall at 10 Public Square.

Among the items on its agenda is the first reading of an ordinance that would ban the "sale, manufacture, use, delivery, purchase, possession or distribution of unregulated marijuana substitutes," according to the proposed amendment to the city ordinance, above.

Unregulated marijuana substitutes are commonly packaged and marketed as "potpourri, bath salts, herbal smoking blends, incense or herbal incense" and can cause hallucinations, disorientation and loss of consciousness, among other effects, the amendment says.

"As this type of social blight continues to spread and affect many of our young people, and since Bartow County has recently enacted a similar ordinance, it seems prudent that the city of Cartersville enact this ordinance in order that we do not become a synthetic marijuana island, where persons desiring to purchase such products come to support their dangerous habit," officials wrote in a police department recommendation.
