The Cartersville science museum is your regional pick for a family-friendly place to spend time on a staycation.
It appears that when you want to get away without really going away, you stay in Cartersville. In this week’s regional Readers’ Choice survey of staycation destinations, three of the top four vote-getters are Cartersville sites: Tellus Science Museum, Pine Mountain Recreation Area and Booth Western Art Museum. And even though six of the 19 poll options are in Cartersville Patch, commenters complained about a couple of the Cartersville sites we left off the list. So it’s only fitting that this week’s Readers’ Choice for favorite staycation destination is in Cartersville: the Tellus museum. Twenty lucky kids will get to do something that’s currently against the rules at Pettit Environmental Preserve.
When school is out for the summer, 20 kids will get to do something most people don't because it's against the rules—fish in the lake at Pettit Environmental Preserve. For children ages 8 to 14, the preserve is set to host a Youth Fishing and Outdoor Camp—along with Cohutta Fishing Company and its more than 50 years of experience as a sport-fishing outfitter—on June 6 and 8. "Last year, Cohutta Fishing Company was a sponsor of our Family Festival and had a fly-fishing and fly-tying demonstration at the preserve," Executive Director Marina Robertson said in a press release. "A big part of Cohutta’s mission is to educate and advocate for preservation of unspoiled spaces, so there is a huge overlap in our missions." The camp was a natural …

The Booth Western Art Museum exhibit from May 15 to Sept. 2 showcases the artist's creative spirit, which emerged from a life-changing event.
Health problems with devastating circumstances led to an awakening for an artist who's work is set to be on display at Booth Western Art Museum in Saddle Up: The Western World of Harry Teague. They could have crippled Harry Teague forever, but following multiple strokes and a heart attack in the early 1990's, he began to put his emotion on canvas through vibrant paintings. An exhibit of his work, Saddle Up: The Western World of Harry Teague, is set for display from May 15 to Sept. 2 in the museum's Borderlands Gallery. “Though he never showed interest in art before, Harry Teague developed a unique talent which helped him cope with his inability to read or articulate after his strokes,” the Booth's Executive Director Seth Hopkins said in a …
