One of Bartow County Schools' honor bands is headed to the Big Apple to play a big venue.
South Central Middle School's Chieftain Honor Band won Festival Disney in April and through a blind audition was selected to play at Carnegie Hall this month at the International Band and Orchestra Festival.
"Going to New York is such an honor," said Sheila Smith. "The band will perform and then have a clinic session with Dr. Frank Batisti, Director Emeritus of the New England Conservatory Wind Ensemble, "a big name in the band world."
Seventh- and eighth-grade members of the honor band will make the trip, for which they had hoped to raise $20,000 in transportation costs, reported The Daily Tribune News.
"We have been working hard to raise money since August," Smith told Cartersville Patch. "The band has raised over $100,000 dollars and I am so proud of them.
"We will represent our school, families and community with pride."
FOX Atlanta, which captured video of the band, above, is set to again film the Big Apple-bound band Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. and the drum line Thursday for a live show at 7:30 a.m., according to the band's Facebook page.
The band leaves March 27 for the March 30 performance at Carnegie Hall.
