One of the largest construction projects in the country, LakePoint Sporting Community & Town Center broke ground on what developers say will be "the premier sports tournament vacation destination in the United States."
The more than 1,200-acre development just outside Cartersville in Emerson will feature state-of-the-art venues for more than 20 of America’s favorite sports and a mixed-use development consisting of commercial, retail and entertainment options.
Excited about LakePoint and looking forward to more sports, stores, restaurants and things to do? Tell us about it in the comments.
LakePoint is set to stimulate the economy through job creation and tourism dollars, and with the help of some of the biggest names in professional sports, including former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, current Braves manager Fredi González and Kansas City Royals manage Ned Yost.
The $1 billion construction project is expected to initially bring 500 to 600 jobs and by the time it opens in 2014, as many as 26,000 jobs, including positions with surrounding businesses, according to the release and 11Alive.
Developers expect LakePoint to bring more than 4 million visitors to Bartow County each year. It's Sports Village will feature 16 major league-sized baseball fields, 14 soccer/lacrosse fields, 16 fast-pitch softball and junior baseball fields, a 20-acre wake park, two Miracle League fields, and a 100,000-square-foot indoor facility for gymnastics, wrestling, volleyball, basketball, cheerleading and other sports.
"LakePoint promotes a healthier youth," Bobby Cox, development partner and former Atlanta Braves Manager, said in a statement. "After all our youth are the future and this project will have a two-fold positive effect not only for economic stimulus, but also the physical and developmental well-being of our youth."
Stores, hotels, restaurants and other amenities are set for five million square feet of the development off Interstate 75.
"We've got ballparks, entertainment venues, everything from golf courses to white water parks to zip lines to major outdoor retailers," Managing Partner Earl Ehrhart told 11Alive.

I can't remember when I've been so excited about something outside of a family achievement...
I am constantly bragging to others that "Lake Point is just one exit from where I live!!!"
I am so proud of the possibilities that this venue can bring to the Emerson, Cartersville, Acworth, North West Ga, Atlanta areas....!!!
Comparatively, I had my doubts about what the Atlantic Station project could do with the old Atlantic Steel property entering Atlanta (I-75 south into Atlanta), but it totally created a GREAT new area for north side of Atlanta.
I think Lake Point Sporting Community and Town Center will similarly Transform this area. However I will miss being able to pull into Red Top Mountain State Park and just eat lunch while peering out over the lake before heading back to work. (May be to many people around for that now)
The designated land area is starting to seem too small for the expectations....!!!
God Speed...!
