Friends of the man killed Sunday in an apparent robbery gathered last night in Canton's Boling Park for a candlelight vigil.
Randal "R.J." Statler Jr., 28, of Cartersville, was found shot and deceased at Sun Glo Car Wash on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive. Cartersville police believe he was the victim of a robbery.
"We are praying we find the person who killed him," said friend and classmate Casey Weaver. "He was kindhearted, would do anything for anyone, the sweetest guy with $1 million heart and an amazing smile."
Statler lived in Cartersville, but grew up in nearby Canton and was a 2002 graduate of Cherokee High School, according to Weaver and other friends. He "worked hard for a living" in construction and leaves behind a dog, according to Molly Childs, who now tends to Bear at a vet's office.
"R.J. was going to start work for me Monday morning. He had just quit his stressful job and was excited to work days with me again," commented Patch user Chris. "He was working nights in construction and would help me during the day some days! No sleep!
"Never met anyone with such [an] incredible work ethic. He had so, so much love for his dad and sister. R.J. would talk about them on a daily basis."
Statler had been employed as a superintendent with Leapley Construction, according to his Facebook page. He "liked" classic rock and heavy metal music, including the band Metallica; cartoons like Family Guy and funny movies; and camping and travelling.
"Tonight is my last project with my company no more superintendent for this guy start new job on Monday, just wanna say thanks to Leapley for everything they did for me over the past few years...," Statler posted on Dec. 11.
Police responding to the Sunday, Dec. 16, call about a man lying next to a truck in the car wash found Statler about 11 p.m. Authorities say he had been “mudding” earlier that day with family members and was at the car wash cleaning his pickup. He was apparently shot once.
Investigators had no suspects Monday. Check back with Cartersville Patch for continuing updates.

Such a sad story...my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this hard time. It breaks my heart to hear of these senseless tragedies in such small towns such as Cartersville. May God have mercy on us all and give strength to those that love him.

I just wish Cartersville PD and any other police would react to situations like this as if it were their own cop. If so, there would be a statewide man hunt. Why do we only do this for cops??? It's baffling!! Cops are important, but the lives they protect should be held higher...it's their job!

Delta Grand, unfortunately you are posting about the police without knowing what all is going on, how many involved in investigating this tragedy, how many agencies are involved, how many hours are being put in, and other information that the public is not privilege to right now due to the nature of the incident.

RJ is an amazing person...he, nor any of us deserve to be left like he was! I know there was also an officer whom lost his life at also a young age and my heart breaks for both families, but I agree Delta, all kinds of news coverage for the police officer, and I am not saying there should not be, but what about the citizen's they are protecting! My son, Little Rob was killed...in 10 days it will be 2 years ago...and my family was close friends with RJ and his family and this is a horrible tragedy that deserves the same respect as the police officer whom also lost his life to gun violence! Now, another mother, father, sister, uncle'S and aunts and countless family members have to bury their loved one and it's time the Cartersville Police and The Bartow Co. Sheriff's Office needs to do something and hold people accountable for their crimes! They need to find this person...people are talking, he's out there and they need to get him! RJ's family will not stop until justice is done, same as my family...After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Ele., we all need to reavaluate what is important, RJ was a registered gun owner, he had his weapon with him, he STILL was killed for no real reason! What do we do as a community to stop this senseless violence? In my opinion, enforcing the laws that are in place now is a very good place to start, as in my son's case. Also, making every homicide important to the powers that be..not just the one's they pick and choose to be important! REST IN PEACE RJ!

Last week was Sandy Hook, and so senseless. It was devastating to the entire country, and even the world. We've almost become numb to the single murders that we hear about. Yet, as this one hits a family we've known for years, it makes me remember how every murder impacts someone. They may not be high profile, or multiples, but each person is part of a family and will be missed.
I sincerely hope they find the person who did this. RJ deserved better, his family deserves better. Randy, Dottie and Nicole, you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I live in cartersville, and in 2005 almost got killed by intruders in my home at about 4:00am.
I survived their blows to my skull with baseball bat. I guess I got lucky. I don't know RJ. But I pray that may Allah bless him and have mercy on him. Also may his family and friends cope with this tragedy. I'm heart broken for this young man. I'll be buying me a gun this week and carry with me. I kept such ideas off from my head for too long. Imagine if he had a gun to protect from the moron thugs.

How does something like this happen a few hundred feet from a Cartersville Police sub-station yet no one saw or heard anything? The family is due answers. I hope they sue the car wash for failing to provide adequate security as well as the City since the police station is so close. I stopped going to this car wash because some crack head came up wanting to "detail" my car with a newspaper for $5. When I declined, he said, "You don't want do that." So, I drove away. Please boycott this location not only due to their disregard of RJ's murder but also because of its location. The location of this is at the corner of MLK (AKA Crack Street) and Tennessee Street. If you don't know - MS-13 runs MLK past Tennessee Street and B.A.M.N. (By Any Means Necessary) runs it from 41 over in the opposite direction. That street overflows with people meth'd out of their minds. There was also a shooting at the Chevron station across the street from the car wash yet the public at large was not warned. It barely made the paper.

Only a miracle will get this thug caught. The guys who tried to kill me back in 2005 were NEVER caught. I hope he/she makes a ridiculous mistake next time and get caught.
After RJ's passing so much unluckily, One must learn from this and protect themselves. Guns aren't bad, its how we use them, that matters. A thug seeing you with a gun will have to think 100 times before messing with you.
The area where RJ was, i wish he knew. That is very rough area, one time i was filling my new car in the corner chevron, and i ended up filling for 1 gallon only to leave asap. Welcome to secure cartersville, where you feel this safe that you can't even fill up your car. And yes, its right beside a police sub-station. irony! huh!

Just letting you know, RJ had his weapon as he is a registered gun owner and had it with him always....it was found with his body. I just wished he would have been able to use it!!! Love you RJ!!

I can hardly stand seeing your truck go by without you in it waving and smiling. You obviously have touched many lives as you did mine. I wish there was something more I could do..The neighborhood wont be the same without you, your red truck roaring by, and that big smile to go along with it. I will never understand why good decent men are taken from us. There are so few of them as it is... We will miss you RJ.
