Energy Star products exempt from state and local sales tax
The weekend of October 5-7 will bring great savings to families looking to make energy-efficient home updates, thanks to Georgia’s upcoming sales tax holiday. Any product that features the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy-approved Energy Star logo, and is valued at or less than $1,500, will be exempt from state and local sales taxes.
Cobb EMC encourages all members to use energy wisely and purchase energy-efficient products. Conserving energy at home can help the environment and reduce your monthly bills for years to come. Some energy-efficient investments, like ceiling fans and programmable thermostats, can also make a big impact on the comfort of your home.
Before you spend money on energy upgrades, an in-home energy audit can help you identify which replacements will get you the greatest return on your tax-free dollars. Simply request a free consultation with a Cobb EMC representative, or email us for a “Do-It-Yourself” home audit kit. If you are pressed for time before the sales tax holiday, you can use Cobb EMC’s home energy calculator, a simple, online tool to help you assess which culprits drive up your home’s electric energy use.
The following products are eligible but must be purchased directly by the homeowner – not through a contractor or third party – for noncommercial use.
- Washing machines
- Air conditioners
- Ceiling fans
- Fluorescent light bulbs
- Programmable thermostats
- Windows and skylights
The sales tax holiday was reinstated as a provision of House Bill 386, which was signed by Governor Nathan Deal earlier this year. Additional rules apply. To view The Department of Revenue’s full guidelines and regulations on eligibility, click here.
